Death is necessary ending and deep change: what cannot continue is cleared so something else can begin.
About this card
In tarot this Major Arcana card rarely means literal death by default. It is transformation through closure. Readers see it in the end of a chapter, the shedding of an identity, and the honest burial of habits or bonds that are finished. Paired with later cards of renewal, it is the hard hinge of the journey. It asks what is already over, and whether you will meet that ending cleanly.

Upright meaning
An ending that clears the way, and change that cannot be postponed forever.
Upright, Death marks a real close: a job, a role, a belief, a relationship pattern, or a version of life that has run its course. Grief may be part of it, but so is relief. The card supports cutting away what is obsolete so energy can move. Fighting the ending usually prolongs the pain without restoring the old form.

Manifestations
- something over even if the group chat has not admitted it
- boxes by the door and a last day at a desk
- an ex or the version of you that kept saying next year
- emptied drawers and keys you no longer need
Reversed meaning
Clinging to the past, incomplete endings, or change resisted until it stalls life.
Reversed, transformation is blocked. You may reopen what should stay closed, deny that a chapter is over, or fear the empty space after loss. Stagnation and half-finished goodbyes appear here. The reading often urges a cleaner break, or at least an honest inventory of what you are keeping alive past its time.
