A 5-card Mercury retrograde tarot spread for Oct 24 to Nov 13, 2026: what each position asks, how to read it, and the key dates in Scorpio.

Mercury went retrograde on October 24, and I already know what you did. You reread a text from someone you swore you were done with. Maybe you typed a reply and deleted it four times. This Mercury retrograde tarot spread is built for that exact mood: five cards, one honest question each, and zero permission to blame a planet for your own thumbs.

Ground rules first. Taroter is for entertainment and reflection, and so is this spread. The cards can't tell you what's going to happen, and neither can Mercury. Nothing here is medical, legal or money advice. If a contract actually matters, read it with someone qualified to read it.

Mercury retrograde 2026: the dates you need

In astrology, Mercury is the planet of communication, travel, tech and paperwork. Retrograde is the stretch when it looks like it's moving backward across the sky. The Old Farmer's Almanac calls that an optical illusion, caused by Earth and Mercury orbiting the Sun at different speeds. Astrologers treat it as review season, and that's the part we'll use.

This is the third and last Mercury retrograde of 2026, and the whole cycle stays inside Scorpio. Here's the timeline, using CHANI's 2026 key dates and Astrology.com:

DateWhat happens
Oct 4Mercury enters its pre-retrograde shadow at 5° Scorpio
Oct 24Mercury stations retrograde at about 21° Scorpio
Oct 30Retrograde Mercury squares Mars
Nov 4Mercury cazimi: Mercury meets the Sun at about 12° Scorpio, the midpoint
Nov 13Mercury stations direct at 5° Scorpio
Nov 29Mercury leaves its post-retrograde shadow (some ephemerides list Nov 30, depending on time zone)

Astrology.com links the Oct 30 square to aggression and debate, and says the fog lifts a little at the Nov 4 cazimi. Venus is also retrograde right now and turns direct on Nov 13, the same day as Mercury. So yes, love and money are joining the group chat.

The tarot side of it

Two cards have a direct line to this retrograde. In the Golden Dawn system, the Magician belongs to Mercury: the talker, the dealmaker, the one with every tool on the table. Death belongs to Scorpio, the sign of secrets, endings and everything people avoid at dinner. Put those together and you get a season that keeps asking what you meant, what you hid, and what you're finally ready to let go of. I wrote a whole post on the Magician tarot card meaning if you want the long version.

The 5-card Mercury retrograde tarot spread

Shuffle, cut, and lay five cards in a row from left to right. Pull them all at once, or pull three now and save four and five for around Nov 4.

Mercury retrograde tarot spread layout diagram in Rider-Waite style: five cards in a row, left to right. 1 The Unsent Message, what you're holding back. 2 The Rerun, what's back for review. 3 The Crossed Wire, where a signal gets muddled. 4 The Cazimi, what gets clearer around Nov 4. 5 The Rewrite, what to revise before Nov 29

1. The Unsent Message

What am I holding back from saying, and why?

The apology, the boundary, the "actually, that hurt" sitting in your notes app. This card shows what's stuck in your throat. Scorpio loves a secret, so be honest about whether you're protecting yourself or just hiding.

2. The Rerun

What from my past is back for review?

Retrogrades are famous for returns: old projects, old friends, the ex who suddenly "found an old photo of us lol." Read this card as the thing asking for a second look. Looking is free. Whether it gets another season is up to you.

3. The Crossed Wire

Where might I be misreading someone, or being misread?

This is the Oct 30 card, the square with Mars, the day everyone types faster than they think. It points at the conversation where tone and intent have drifted apart. Swords here usually mean an argument living mostly in your head. Cups mean feelings that never got said plainly.

4. The Cazimi

What gets clearer if I stop guessing?

The cazimi is the moment Mercury sits right at the heart of the Sun, so this position is about clarity. Pull it around Nov 4 if you're doing the spread in two sittings. Whatever lands here is the part of the story that makes sense once you quit filling the gaps with worst-case theories.

5. The Rewrite

What do I want to revise before the shadow ends on Nov 29?

Pick one thing: a habit, a plan, a message. Read this card as your edit note, and keep it small enough to actually do.

How to read the whole spread

Read the cards as a conversation. Start with 1 and 3 together. The thing you won't say is often the exact thing causing the crossed wire. If card 1 is the Two of Swords and card 3 is the Page of Swords, you've been dodging one conversation while gossip fills the silence. Congratulations, you did the reading in one sentence.

Then pair 2 and 5. If the Rerun and the Rewrite rhyme, the past is handing you a do-over with better notes. If they clash, you might be reopening something just to feel busy.

Read card 4 last, with everything else in view.

Reversals count. A reversed card here often reads as energy that's delayed, stuck or turned inward, which fits a retrograde almost too well.

Cards that love a Mercury retrograde reading

These show up a lot when people are in their feelings about texts:

  • The Magician. Mercury's own card. Upright, you have the words and the skill to use them well. Reversed, someone is spinning a story, possibly you.
  • Page of Swords. Messages, curiosity, and a little too much interest in other people's business. Check the source before you repeat anything.
  • Six of Cups. Nostalgia. The ex text card. Sweet memories can be just that, memories.
  • Eight of Swords. Feeling trapped by your own thoughts. The blindfold is looser than it looks.
  • Death. Scorpio's card. An ending that clears space. In the Rewrite position, it suggests the edit is cutting something out.

For a wider look at the scary ones, I ranked the worst tarot cards to pull. If you're new to all of this, my no-nonsense beginner's guide to tarot reading covers shuffling, reversals and the rest.

Full disclosure: I'm guilty too

I have absolutely left someone on read and blamed Mercury. If you've been following Not Like I Waited, you know I'm not great at saying what I mean on the first try. Rumour has it the crew wants to film me doing exactly that, cards in hand, trying to prove the planet made me do it. The cards will not back me up. They never do.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Mercury retrograde tarot spread?

It's a tarot layout built around retrograde themes like communication, the past and revision. This one uses five cards for reflection, from what you're holding back to what you want to revise.

When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac (Eastern Time), Mercury is retrograde Feb 26 to Mar 20, June 29 to July 23, and Oct 24 to Nov 13, 2026. The last one has a post-retrograde shadow until about Nov 29.

Is it bad to do a tarot reading during Mercury retrograde?

No. Plenty of readers like retrograde season for tarot because it's a time for looking back and reviewing, and that's what a reflective spread does best. Just don't treat any card as a forecast.

Which tarot card is linked to Mercury?

The Magician, in the Golden Dawn system. Mercury also rules Gemini and Virgo, which link it to the Lovers and the Hermit.

Can I use this spread after Nov 13?

Yes. It works any time you're replaying conversations, and the shadow through Nov 29 is a good time to pull card five again.

Pull a card before you hit send

If you're about to type something at 2 a.m., do me a favour and pull one card first. Pull a card at Taroter, pick your reader (yes, I'm an option), and see what the deck says about that draft. It might save you a very awkward Nov 14.

Taroter is for entertainment purposes only. Not intended as a prediction of future events. Must be 18 years of age or older.
